Eleven Jackie’s met Friday, October 2, at the Woodlands Amphitheater. It was a beautiful day sitting by the lake and catching up with one another. After 7 months of COVID confinement, ladies shared stories of their activities, including new skills they’d developed, crafts and art projects, playing cards via Zoom and other online venues as well as repurposing and creating new items from ones no longer wanted.
We also featured the 100th year celebration of Women’s Right to Vote using the Women’s Suffrage article provided by Pat Dashiell in her August newsletter to the Vintage Ladies Chapters. We then taxed our memories with a question-quiz activity with prizes for most correct answers.
Southport historian, Mussett Steck, took the Jackies on an historic slide tour presentation of the Trinity Methodist Church on Nash Street. This 1888 Church still contains its beautiful original woodwork and much of its original architecture. Mussett also led us through stories and recollections of Southport’s culture, both African Americans and Caucasians, working cooperatively. She and another historian, Donnie, physically toured us through the Mount Carmel AME Church (1814) on Lord Street, the oldest church in Southport, and the original location of the Trinity Methodist Church. The AME Church is currently undergoing renovation from damage sustained from hurricanes Florence and Dorian. Its original floor was able to be saved and restored. The Jackies were also able to celebrate Mussett’s contributions, and relocation to the Durham area, with coffee and cake. We wish Mussett the best.
Thanks to Bett Lewis and Mercedes Evans for organizing this wonderful event. they are.
